| Introduction to the Collection Contents |
| |
The collection encompasses works of art from all the major European schools.
The small number of oil paintings, from the Dutch, German, Italian and English schools, include a few ancestral portraits and a series of family portraits by the local artist Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (1723-1792). Though few in number the collection of bronzes, plasters and other sculpture are largely of the Italian, French and English schools. The few pieces of furniture include the fine bookcases especially commissioned to house the library and an Italian collectors cabinet, whilst the ceramics are mainly oriental porcelain.
The collection of several hundred Old Master and English drawings include works by Vasari, Napoletano, Castiglione, della Bella from the Italian schools, whilst the northern schools are represented by artists such as van Goyen, Bloemaert and Siberechts and the English by Wootton, Deacon and Lambert. The few watercolours include a fine Sandby and a set of Indian watercolour drawings of the Mughal school. The library of around 2000 volumes covers all manner of subject matter from history and archaeology, literature and the arts including many illustrated books. The extensive collection of prints numbering approximately seven thousand includes substantial holdings by Dutch and Flemish, French and Italian and English schools.
A variety of images and information about items in the collection is provided on the site. This can be accessed in different ways, either by selecting the relevant category in the panel to the left, or by selecting Search from the navigation bar which will allow you to search by artists and engravers.
