Drawings & Watercolours

European Schools
There are approximately three hundred drawings and watercolours in the Cottonian Collection, mostly drawings. They include works by many Old Masters and English artists from the 16th to 18th centuries such as Andrea del Sarto, Castiglione, Van Goyen, Rysbrack and Thornhill.
Though a small number of the drawings were inherited from William Townson (1682-1740), the vast majority were purchased by Charles Rogers (1711-1784). Some drawings were even commissioned or acquired directly from the artist such as de Loutherbourg and Rysbrack.
It is possible to search the database for drawings and watercolours by artist. Please click the search button on the top navigation bar to go to the SEARCH page.
Indian Watercolours
In addition to the European schools, there is a collection of twenty-one Indian watercolours from the Mughal School, dating from around 1735.
They can be accessed by selecting the term Mughal School in the SEARCH feature.
