QCA History Unit 6A:
(Link to: Standards Site)
Why have people invaded and settled in Britain in the past? A Roman Case Study

There is currently one project available for Unit 6A. It was developed during 2004 in conjunction with St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Plymouth. Thanks are due to Anne Botten, History Co-ordinator for her support and enthusiasm in the production of this project. Also to Claudius Maximus whose presence helped focus the children'sattention on aspects of Roman culture!

The activities developed with St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School focus on 3 main aspects. They are the army, religion and Roman Britain. Other themes that could be used as a focus for this project in the future could be the life of the Celts, Roman technology, local history (where relevant) or a cross curricular study with geography.

Roman Handling Collections & Support Visits

A resource box of replica artefacts has now been acquired and is available for loan to any local Plymouth school wanting to carry out this project using the images from the Cottonian Collection. This may be requested at the time of emailing for the Teacher's pack on the 'Contact Us' page.

As part of this project, Session 3 was held involving the examination of original Roman artefacts., form the Human History handling collections and were used under the supervision of museum staff. To find out more and book such a visit, please contact the Education Department direct on (01752) 304771.

Historical Re-enactment

In Session 6 of this project an actor was hired in the role of Claudius Maximus, a Roman soldier. He spent a day with the classes 'entirely in character' and brought the world of the Romans much closer to the children - they were captivated! To source such character actors in your area contact your local museum, Education Department history team or try the following website - www.livinghistory.co.uk
