| Designation Scheme |
| |
During 1997 the government introduced the Designation scheme, initially administered by the Museums & Galleries Commission (now the MLA). The aim was to recognise collections and museums of outstanding importance in non-national museums in England. The Cottonian Collection was designated in 1998.
The Designation Challenge Fund provided financial support for various projects, all aimed at increasing public access to the collection. The projects included cataloguing and documentation, photography and digitisation, and the development of an on-site public access terminal and this web site devoted to the Cottonian Collection.
All museums and collections with Designated status display the 'D' logo.
Further information about the Designation scheme, designated museums and collections can be found by clicking on 'MLA' below and two web sites - Cornucopia and the 24 Hour Museum. These can be accessed through the Links page.
