Photography of the Cottonian Collection
 
    1. The taking of photographs, filming, or any form of reproduction is not normally allowed in the Cottonian Collection, or elsewhere in the Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery.



    2. This is to protect the unauthorised use of copy images of all items on display or in store which are the subject of copyright.



    3. This includes photography of works on display in temporary exhibitions associated with the Cottonian Collection.



    4. On occasion, permission may be granted for certain types of non-commercial photography for specified purposes, including:
    • private study and research;
    • by students carrying out specified research/projects;




    5. Such permission will only be granted if:
    • copyright law permits;
    • there is no existing reproduction of the specific work;
    • on the strict understanding that the copyright of the works photographed remains with the Cottonian Collection;
    • there is no commercial use of the resulting photographs;
    • that any reproduction deriving from the photographs taken will be subject to further written permission.




    6. Such photography will be for hand-held cameras only, no flash may be used.



    7. Such permission will only be given and must be obtained, in advance.



    8. Identification may be requested at any point.



    9. Application forms for photography outlined above may be obtained:
    • in person from the Reception Desk in the entrance hall of the Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery;
    • by post, please make your request through e-mail, or other means;

    Please note that forms may take 1-2 weeks to be processed. It is the responsibility of the enquirer to allow enough time to obtain permission.
